Hopscotch 34 was composed
while I was reading the 1966 Gregory Rabassa translation
of the 1963 Julio Cortázar counter-novel Rayuela (Hopscotch).
Cortázar's book reminds me of Ornette Coleman’s harmolodic theory
in that any chapter can transition into any other chapter.
Cortázar himself suggests two possible chapter sequences.
Chapter 34 alternates line by line between two of Horacio’s interior voices.
One inner voice reads the text of a novel his companion La Maga has left
lying around the flat, while the other excoriates that novel’s use
of “prefabricated words to transmit superannuated ideas.”
